It rolls with Alexandra Galarneau

A lifelong cycling enthusiast, Alexandra Galarneau now combines two worlds that complement each other perfectly: sports and mental performance. An athlete, coach, and student, she shares with us her vision of pushing boundaries, her history with cycling, and what the CNCB means to her—a place where elite athletes and beginners come together to grow their passion.

What is mental performance?

Mental performance is an educational approach that seeks to understand and develop an athlete's mental abilities in order to optimize their performance, but also their personal well-being.

How did you get hooked on biking?

My parents met on the Quebec Cup and Canada Cup cross-country mountain biking circuit. So I started cross-country at a very young age, then after a short break to try other sports, I returned to downhill racing.

What do you think the CNCB brings to young people and the cycling community?

It's a catalyst for opportunities. When you come here, whether you're young or not so young, you have the chance to meet very inspiring coaches and athletes.

What do you find unique about CNCB?

Precisely, the fact that the elite and beginners rub shoulders in the same building.

If someone wanted to get started, what would you tell them to begin with?

For cycling, it would be to surround yourself with people who know what they're doing and who can accompany you. Otherwise, as far as the National Center is concerned, it would be to come and take an introductory course such as PowerWatts or track cycling.

What is your favorite moment in a competition?

The moment after passing a technical section or part of the course that you know you did well and can give yourself a little encouragement.

What has cycling taught you about yourself?

That I was capable of facing many more fears and anxieties than I thought I could.

A mistake you made that taught you a lot?

What I learned a lot after making some mistakes is to focus on the task at hand or on my descent. More often than not, it's when you focus on what you're doing that you get better results, not the other way around!

Do you drive with or without music? If so, what's your go-to song?

For everyday use, no. But to get me pumped up before a race, yes! My go-to song is Mind Over Matter by Young the Giant.

What are you trying to convey beyond biking?

As a student of mental performance, it's clear to me that the psychological aspect counts for a lot. It's about understanding the impact that our minds can have on our athletic performance.   From cross-country to downhill racing, Alexandra reminds us that beyond the podiums, cycling is a lesson in confidence, perseverance, and enjoyment.
